Panhandle Energy - Houston, TX

Electrical installation of two Solar T-70 turbines and compressors, standby generators, building services, and control system modifications for two natural gas compressor stations.

In Progress

Great Plains CO2 Compressor Station - Beulah, ND
Dakota Gasification - Bismark, ND

Electrical installation of a new 19,700 horsepower Carbon Dioxide Compressor Station.  Installation included the following electrical items: cable bus, distribution equipment, power feeders, instrumentation and control wiring, lighting, and grounding. This station compresses the carbon dioxide and delivers it to the pipeline for use in extracting oil from the existing fields in the United States and Canada.

MJE received an Energy Coalition for Contractor Safety award for the Dakota Gasification CO2 Compressor Station project which had no incidents, no recordables, and no first aid cases.

Completed in 2006

Marathon KDS (Kerosene De-Sulfurization) Refinery Project - Catlettsburg, KY
Marathon Oil - Catlettsburg, KY

Above ground electrical and instrumentation installation of a new hydrotreater to remove sulfur from kerosene. Installation of a new substation to support KDS, maintenance of pump out system, and new oily water/storm sewer system to support KDS. Project included installation of cable tray, conduit, lighting, grounding, cable and terminations.

Completed in 2006

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Project - Laurel, MT

CHS, Inc. - Laurel, MT

Electrical installation of cable, conduit, bus, transformers, cable tray and control stations for a new refinery. The installation included testing of all cables, instruments and switchgear and calibration and startup assistance.

Completed in 2005

Superior Green Gas Project - Superior, WI
Murphy Oil USA, Inc. - Superior, WI

Electrical installation of cable trays, conduit, and cable to interconnect the prefabricated modules and all field-installed instruments, motors, and control devices to the MCC and Control Building. Major components on the project include 2 – 900 HP gas compressors, 40 pump motors (various horsepower), and 130 light fixtures.

Completed in 2004

Compressor Station No. 3 MCC Control Upgrade - Shevlin, MN

Great Lakes Gas Transmission Company - Troy, MI

M. J. Electric, LLC installed all new power, control, and instrumentation to modernize the controls and replace MCCs.  MJE installed new conduit and MCCs and removed old MCCs and equipment.  MJE also replaced some damaged conduit and cable due to a turbine malfunction.

Completed in 2003

IBM Building P5 Chilled Water Plant Project - Chicago, IL
Exelon Thermal - Chicago, IL

M. J. Electric, LLC furnished two 10 MVA 13.8/4160 Volt transformers, 4160 Volt switchgear, two 480 Volt motor control centers, UPS system, lighting, plus all associated conduit and wire.

The 800 ton chilled water plant design/construct project was designed to boost Exelon Thermal's capacity of providing chilled water for air conditioning of buildings in downtown Chicago.  It is located underneath the plaza between the IBM Building and the Chicago River.

Completed in 2002

New Aux Sable Liquid Gas Extraction Plant - Morris, IL
Aux Sable Liquid Products - Morris, IL

In 2000, M. J. Electric completed a large electrical and instrumentation construction project for the Aux Sable Liquid Products’ $365 million World Class Liquid Gas Extraction Facility in Morris, IL.  The plant was built to process natural gas from the Alliance Pipeline, which runs from northwestern Canada to the Chicago area.

The state-of-the-art gas processing facility has the capacity to break down 1.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day into 70,000 barrels per day of propane, normal butane, iso-butane, ethane, and natural gasoline.  The plant also connects with several existing pipelines and serves as a hub for distributing natural gas liquids in the United States.

All of M. J. Electric’s construction divisions played a role in the “Big Aux” project.  The Industrial Division was awarded the inside electrical contract, and the Utility Division provided engineering and construction for the 138 kV substation at the site for Commonwealth Edison.  Process Controls and Instrumentation (PCI) also installed the large, complex instrumentation package for the site.

For the inside electrical contract, MJE installed switchgear, motor control centers, approximately 60,000 feet of cable tray, 50,000 feet of wire basket, 600 feet of Trenwa, 12,000 feet of duct bank conduit, 1,500 feet of cable bus, 1,600,000 feet of cable, 75,000 feet of ground wire, 257 ground rods, 42,000 feet of heat tracing, 20,000 feet of pneumatic tubing, 1,900 instruments, and 1,272 light fixtures.

MJE managed a large labor force (300-400 employees) to complete the Aux Sable project.  Work began in February 2000 and finished in the fall of 2000.  The plant began production in December 2000.

Completed in 2000

Four Compressor Stations - Various Locations in ND, MN, and IA

Alliance Pipeline - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

M. J. Electric was the electrical contractor on four of seven mainline compressor stations being built in the United States for the Alliance Pipeline.   The compressor stations were located at:

  • Fairmount, North Dakota;
  • Olivia, Minnesota;
  • Albert Lea, Minnesota; and
  • Manchester, Iowa.

The Alliance Pipeline, which began operations in the fall of 2000, was constructed to deliver natural gas from Canada to the United States.  The $5.65 billion natural gas pipeline system starts in northern British Columbia and runs to the Chicago, Illinois area where it interconnects with the North American pipeline grid.

The overall length of the mainline pipeline is 1,858 miles with 970 miles in Canada and 888 miles in the United States.  The pipeline has 14 compressor stations (7 in Canada and 7 in the United States).  The compressor stations are each 23-29 MW (31,000-40,000 HP) and spaced about 120 miles apart.

MJE's project included all the electrical wiring, cable tray, cable, conduit, and lighting for the compressor building and other buildings on site.  We also wired remote sites along the pipeline route.

The pipeline runs to the $365 million Aux Sable Liquid Products gas extraction facility in Morris, Illinois, south of Chicago.  The facility provides gas separation and converts the raw gas into natural gas, propane, ethane, and other gases.

New Steel Mini Mill, Galvanizing Line, New Picking Line, & 15 kV Distribution System - Terre Haute , IN

Heartland Steel - Terre Haute, IN

This project consisted of three phases. The first phase, a 15 kV distribution system, included the installation of 20 unit substations and all primary 15 kV feeder cables.  High voltage power from the substation was also connected to the power control regulating buildings. For the second phase, the pickling line, we installed the electrical, controls, motors, cable, wire, and cable tray for the pickling line. The third phase, MJE installed the electrical package for the galvanizing line.

    M. J. Electric's Utility Division also installed the 138 kV/13.8 kV harmonic filter switchyard for the mini mill.

New Herbicide Plant - Muskegon, MI

Aventis - Liberty Midwest - Muskegon, MI

    M. J. Electric along with our Process Controls and Instrumentation Division were the electrical and instrumentation contractors on a new $34 million herbicide manufacturing plant in Muskegon, Michigan. The plant was built to manufacture a herbicide for corn and soybeans called “Liberty”.

The latest technology and innovations were incorporated into the plant, including glass-lined stirred vessels, distillation columns, and filtration units. The plant was also equipped with filling lines and packaging equipment. The project was very instrumentation intensive.
