M. J. Electric (MJE) subcontracted Dashiell and Electric Power Engineers (EPE) to provide the geotech analysis/design and balance of plant design for the installation of the 20 MW Marengo Battery Storage Facility in north central Illinois. The project included foundations, grounding, below ground and above ground raceway, cable, control house, electrical, protection, and SCADA. The substation contains nine 2.6 MVA battery banks and is connected to an adjacent utility substation via a 4,000 foot underground 34.5 kV tie line. The owner provided the integration software and programmable logic controller to control all of the equipment at the site as well as the designs for the battery enclosures and control building. MJE led the team for Leclanche, the overall EPC provider who provided the batteries. Based in Switzerland, this was Leclanche’s first U.S. storage project. This facility, owned by Swiss Green Electricity Management Group, delivers 10 megawatt-hours of energy to provide PJM real-time frequency response.
