North Lake Substation - Ishpeming, MI

Management of all construction activities associated with this green-field substation including logging, site development, foundations, fencing, etc. Electrical construction includes the relocation and connection of (2) 41 MVA 138/69 kV transformers, (5) 138 kV breakers (4) 69 kV breakers, new control house, installation of (27) 138/69 kV switches, (31) 138/69 kV PTs, CTs, Wave Traps, etc. along with all steel, raceway, and cable systems. The project also includes the complete removal and restoration of an existing 138 kV substation.

Management of all construction activities associated with this green-field substation including logging, site development, foundations, fencing, etc. Electrical construction includes the connection of (1) 200 MVA 138/115 kV transformer, (1) 60 MVA 138/69 kV transformer, (1) 16 MVAR 138 kV capacitor bank and circuit switcher, (4) 138 kV breakers, (1) 69 kV breaker, (10) new control house 138/69 kV switches, and (13) PTs and CTs including all steel, raceway, and cable systems.

National Grid - Syracuse, NY
Several 345 kV substation breaker replacements along with all new relay equipment for the new breakers. MJE also changed out all of the switches & control cable, CCVT’s, strain bus, and jumpers.

Trumbull Substation - Trumbull, CT
United Illuminating Company - New Haven, CT
Construction of an 115/13.8 kV substation including site clearing, cut & fill operations, storm water management system, water & sewer services, concrete foundations, and transformer pads with containment pits. Installation of major equipment consisting of (3) 115 kV SF6 circuit breakers, (2) 115/13.8 kV 24/32/40 MVA transformers, two transmission line poles, and a power distribution building with relay panels & 13.8 kV metal-clad switchgear.

Killingly Substation - Killingly, CT
Connecticut Light & Power - Hartford, CT
Engineering, procurement, and construction of the new 345/115 kV Killingly Substation. The project also included changes and improvements at five existing electrical substation facilities. The modifications and enhancements included: modifying the existing primary and backup relaying, removing existing carrier communication equipment, and adding a new 345 kV breaker.

West Loop 138 kV Switching Station - Chicago, IL
Commonwealth Edison - Chicago, IL
This greenfield 138 kV switching station is the new heart of the downtown Chicago north grid. It consists of four separate ring busses with six 3000A breakers each, and tie breakers between the rings. Related work included transmission tunnels under the Chicago River. Infrastructure was also prepared for a new 345 kV GIS building on site.

Elm Road Substation - Oak Creek, WI
American Transmission Company - Pewaukee, WI
Installation of a new 345 kV substation, including nine new 345 kV breakers, and the relocation of five existing breakers. The existing 345 kV substation will be completely removed. The project also included the relocation of four existing 345 kV transformers and additions to existing 230 kV and 138 kV substations.

Wolf’s Crossing 345 kV/138 kV Substation - Naperville, IL

M. J. Electric installed the ground grid, all steel structures, bus, gas breakers, disconnects, and metering transformers for this substation. MJE also installed and terminated control wiring in the pre-fab control building, which was installed by ComEd in addition to the 300 MVA transformer. Installation also included static shield poles as well as sixteen 138 kV and 345 kV transmission poles. This substation’s footprint encompasses nearly 70 acres to allow room for future expansion.

Weber Road 138 kV/12 kV TDC Substation - Romeoville, IL
Commonwealth Edison - Chicago, IL
The project included the installation of two 40 MVA 138/13.8 kV transformers along with all site prep, foundations, grounding, underground raceway and modular trench, and a modular switchgear building including construction of the entrance road, fencing, and stone yard surfacing. Modifications to an adjacent 138 kV line provided connectivity to ComEd’s system.
Personnel from M. J. Electric, Dashiell (design), ComEd Engineering, and Exelon Energy Delivery worked closely to ensure that project performance met or exceeded plan. By working together, the project team delivered phenomenal results for ComEd. Construction was completed in less than 90 days, 20 days ahead of schedule, and under budget. This project was completed in a shorter time frame than any known similar ComEd TDC. Normal construction times range from 4 to 6 months.

Two 230 kV Substations & 230 kV Transmission Line - Marcus Hook, PA
Florida Power & Light - Juno Beach, FL
M. J. Electric installed a 230 kV switchyard for a new 750 MW natural gas-fired co-generation power plant located in Sunoco's Marcus Hook Refinery. Work included the construction of a double circuit 230 kV transmission line to tie in the substation to nearby transmission lines.

138 kV Townline Switchyard - Beloit, WI
American Transmission Company - Pewaukee, WI
The Townline Substation project included all design, engineering, and construction of a 138 kV switchyard with nine incoming 138 kV circuits and ½ mile of double circuit 138 kV transmission line for a tie line from the switchyard to the existing Rock River Substation.
The substation is located at the site of the new 600 MW Riverside Energy Center, which is located adjacent to Alliant Energy's Rock River Generating Station in Beloit, Wisconsin.
M. J. Electric was also the electrical contractor for Riverside Energy Center.

Calumet Energy 138 kV Substation - Calumet City, IL
Wisvest Corportation - Calumet City, IL
M. J. Electric installed two substations and line work at the Calumet Energy facility. For the project, MJE installed the substation adjacent to the plant as well as the 138 kV substation located north of the plant. The project also connected the plant and substations to two 138 KV transmission lines to join Commonwealth Edison's system.

500 kV Switchyard for the New 620 MW Fayette Energy Facility - Ronco, PA
Black & Veatch/Duke Energy - KS/NC
The switchyard construction included the installation of foundations, ground grid, over 600 feet of Trenwa, bus work, the yard steel and apparatus, and surfacing.
M. J. Electric worked for Black and Veatch on the substation for the Fayette Energy Facility, owned by Duke Energy.

345 kV Substation Pleasant Valley Station - Dexter, MN
Great River Energy - Dexter, MN

M. J. Electric performed the above and below grade construction. The 345/161 kV substation covers 8.5 acres and has six transformers: one 500 MVA transformer, three 225 MVA Generator Step Up (GSU) transformers, and two 25 MVA station power transformers.
M. J. Electric was also the electrical contractor for three units at Pleasant Valley Station.

GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) Substation Experience

Waterside GIS Substation - Louisville, KY
Louisville Gas & Electric - Louisville, KY
Installation of 138 kV ABB GIS switchgear in a linear layout of eight load and eight tie breakers, in a ring electrical circuit that ties together four outside transmission lines and four onsite 50 MVA distribution transformers. The project also includes installation of 32 inductors, four capacitor banks, and 82 sections of 14 kV distribution switchgear.

Replacement of existing 120 kV GIS equipment with new GIS equipment manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc. Work will be done sequentially so the equipment remains in service throughout the project duration.

West Loop 345 kV GIS Substation - Chicago, IL
Commonwealth Edison - Chicago, IL
This greenfield 345 kV Gas Insulated Substation consists of two breakers feeding two 300 MVA transformers, which feed two previously constructed 138 kV ring busses on the same site.

Majestic Substation - Dexter, MI

Performed civil and below ground work to add a new 120 kV bus section, line exit, and new 345/120 kV transformer to tie in a new line terminal to Madrid Substation. MJE also removed an existing GE 345 kV air blast type breaker and replaced it with a new 345 kV SF6 Gas Insulated Style Mitsubishi breaker.

Caniff Substation - Detroit, MI
Mitsubishi Electric Power Products - Warrendale, PA
Replaced GIS equipment at an existing substation with six new 120 kV breakers, 44-120 kV switches, and associated equipment, all fitting on a concrete foundation of only 108x41 feet. Performed all project construction, including excavation, foundations, equipment installation, wiring, checkout support, and removal of old equipment.

St. Antoine Substation - Detroit, MI

Complete replacement of existing indoor 120 kV SF6 substation equipment with 3 new SF6 breakers and related SF6 bus and equipment supplied by Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. Work was performed so that existing bus sections were replaced individually to minimize multiple outages on existing feeders and transformers.

Installation of Mitsubishi 138 kV GIS configured as an 8-tap ring bus, underground duct work, control panels, cathodic protection, and approximately 1,300 control cables.

State Street 138 kV Substation - Chicago, IL
Commonwealth Edison - Chicago, IL
State Street Substation included an enclosed 138 kV G.I.S. building, five 50 MVA transformers, and a 12 kV switchgear building.
The project was part of an alliance between M. J. Electric, Kenny Construction, and Sargent & Lundy Engineers.

Six Pack Substation Projects - Chicago, IL

During the Six Pack Substation Project for Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) in Chicago, MJE worked on three substations simultaneously.
The following is a brief overview of the construction activities at each site:
Kingsbury Substation:
This site consists of two substations adjacent to each other. Two complete multi-ring GIS sets of breakers were installed inside a new five-story brick building. 
Northwest Substation:
This site replaced five transmission transformers (3 - 40 MVA and 2 - 75 MVA), added a switchgear building above the existing switchgear building, installed new switchgear and power cable, erected new substation steel and switches throughout the yard, installed multiple SF6 breakers, put in new duct banks and miles of control cable. This was an existing "HOT" substation.
Diversey Substation:
Construction of a new 138 kV substation, including four 50 MVA transformers, thousands of pounds of substation steel, related bus and switches, capacitor banks, switchgear, and miles of control and power cable. In addition to a very compact switchyard, the site construction included a massive, two-story control building.
All three were completed in 2000

SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) Experience

SCADA Substation Project - Chicago, IL
Commonwealth Edison - Chicago, IL
M. J. Electric was the contractor for a multi-year project with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) for the installation of SCADA technology in ComEd substations in the Chicago area.
M. J. Electric teamed up with Sargent & Lundy for this design/build SCADA project, which involved work at over 60 substation sites.

HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Converter Experience

ABB Arrestor Upgrade Project at Coal Creek Station - Underwood, ND

The project involved the replacement of arrestors and equipment, terminations, and improvements in the substation.
